TOENAIL FUNGUS FACT SHEET
Onychomycosis (also known as "dermatophytic of the nail," "ringworm of the nail," and "tinea unguium") means fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails and constitutes about a half of all nail abnormalities. This condition may affect toenails or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common. The prevalence of onychomycosis is about 6-8% in the adult population in United States. Treatment of onychomycosis is challenging because the infection is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach.
Why did we select this specific technology? Before we utilize a treatment modality we need to have a high level of confidence that the treatment will be effective. The Echonia Lunula Laser, which our office utilizes, is FDA approved for the treatment of onychomycosis (nail fungus). It is the premier laser for nail fungus because it has a patented micro-second technology, a duo long-pulsed wavelength with a 605 nm diode aiming beam. There are prudent protocols to be employed with any procedure and treating fungus nails with a laser is no exception.
How does the laser work? The mechanism of action is thought to be a combination of photo-inactivation of the fungus cells and the increased vascularity of the nail bed with laser energy to the point of reparitative and regeneration of the cells. The penetration level of the laser is dependent on the wavelength of the machine and that is why we have selected this machine for the office. The efficacy (described as clearing of nail) is estimated to be over 80%. Of course, in medicine, there are always exceptions and cases that stump all the experts.
